The following case study outlines our redesign process of Boston Consulting Group's (BCG) Smart Search platform. This tool is essential for BCG consultants, providing them with rapid access to knowledge and intelligence across the organization, housed within an extensive digital document database. The redesign focused on improving the speed, relevance, and personalization of search results, alongside enhancing tools for reporting accuracy and usefulness.

BACKGROUND

The initial Search platform faced several critical issues:

Inefficient Search Results: Consultants often struggled to find relevant information quickly due to less precise search algorithms and disorganized results.

Poor User Experience: The interface was cluttered, making it difficult for users to navigate and locate the information they needed.

Lack of Personalization: The system did not adequately learn from user behavior to provide personalized recommendations, leading to repeated manual searches for frequently accessed documents.

Inadequate Reporting Tools: Tools for reporting the accuracy and usefulness of search results were underdeveloped, hindering the platform's ability to improve over time. Objective

Defining the Redesign Goals:The primary objectives for the redesign were:

Enhance Search Accuracy and Speed: Implement advanced algorithms to provide more accurate and faster search results.

Improve User Interface and Experience: Create a streamlined, intuitive, and user-friendly interface.

Introduce Personalization Features: Develop features that adapt to user behavior, offering personalized document and knowledge recommendations.

Upgrade Reporting Tools: Integrate robust reporting mechanisms to capture user feedback and improve search relevance continually.

DEFINING THE REDESIGN GOALS

The primary objectives for the redesign were:

Enhance Search Accuracy and Speed: Implement advanced algorithms to provide more accurate and faster search results.

Improve User Interface and Experience: Create a streamlined, intuitive, and user-friendly interface.

Introduce Personalization Features: Develop features that adapt to user behavior, offering personalized document and knowledge recommendations.

Upgrade Reporting Tools: Integrate robust reporting mechanisms to capture user feedback and improve search relevance continually.

APPROACH

User Research and Analysis: Conducted surveys and interviews with BCG consultants to understand their pain points and requirements. Analyzed user interactions to identify common issues and areas for improvement.

Wireframing and Prototyping: Created low-fidelity wireframes to map out the new interface layout and functionality. Developed high-fidelity prototypes incorporating feedback from initial testing phases.

UI/UX Design: Focused on a clean, minimalistic design that prioritizes usability. Enhanced navigation with clear categorizations and advanced filtering options.

Feedback and Reporting Integration: Designed an intuitive reporting tool within the platform for users to rate search results and provide feedback on relevance. Worked with BCG development team to track feedback data and continually improve search algorithms based on user input.

Testing and Iteration: Conducted multiple rounds of usability testing with consultants to ensure the redesign met their needs. Iteratively refined the platform based on testing feedback, ensuring a high level of user satisfaction.

Measuring the Impact: Increased Efficiency: Search result relevance improved by 45%, significantly reducing the time consultants spent finding information. The average search time decreased by 30%, boosting overall productivity.

Enhanced User Satisfaction: User satisfaction scores rose by 40%, reflecting a more intuitive and user-friendly interface. Personalized recommendations led to a 35% increase in user engagement with the platform.

Better Reporting and Continuous Improvement: The new reporting tools received positive feedback, with 40% of users regularly submitting ratings and comments. Ongoing improvements based on user feedback have maintained high levels of search accuracy and relevance.
